Transforming Sanitation in South Africa
Waterless, hygienic, circular economy sanitation systems for communities in South Africa; because everyone deserves a better life always.
Kaloola Home is a South African Non Profit Company (NPC) and a Public Benefit Organisation as defined under Section 30 of the Income Tax Act
“I love my toilet as it’s right outside my door. It’s safe to use even at night. I can even lock it from the inside when I go to the toilet. My toilet makes me feel special.”
Veronica Mashentshweni
Driven by a simple belief that everyone should have a toilet that’s safe and clean, protects water resources, supports circular economies, and most importantly, brings joy to everyday life.
Kaloola operates a sanitation-as-a-service model in informal settlements, currently serving communities in Durban and expanding into other cities. Kaloola provides ongoing, managed sanitation services: clean, maintained, and designed for the communities using them.
This is not a one-off project, but a sustainable service. It is infrastructure. A long-term solution built around the people who need it most. By treating sanitation as a service, Kaloola creates something that lasts: dignity for South African communities.

What makes the Kaloola experience unique?
-
Our patented waterless flush toilet hermetically seals waste in a lining material and transfers it to a container below the floor, locking away germs and odour and providing clean bowl for every use.
When the container is full, the Kaloola servicing team swaps it out for a new one.
-
No water and no chemicals! Even compared to low-flush toilets, Kaloola can save homes more than 3,600L of water every year.
-
No exposure to waste, no waste building up around your home, and no faecal plume from misting flush water - all thanks to our unique sealing technology.
-
Servicing our toilets takes just a few moments and is a clean, easy job for servicers, with no heavy trucks or bad smells.
-
Kaloola captures waste as fresh feedstock for circular processing into biogas and nutrients (organics) and recycling (non-organics), free of biocide chemicals or organic additives.
Kaloola enables the recapture of energy and nutrients at utility sites, and the recycling of other toilet inputs.
-

Sanitation supports Education
When students schools have safe, private toilets, students can focus on learning.
Today, millions of children still attend schools without adequate sanitation, creating barriers to health, dignity and participation—especially for girls during their periods.
Improving sanitation in schools helps build learning environments where every student can show up, stay in class and thrive.
We work alongside local communities and schools to provide clean, safe toilets that support children’s health, wellbeing and development.
Safe sanitation restores health, hope, safety and dignity
